鈥淧articipating in running events is not without risk,鈥 Pedersen explains. 鈥淭he most important risk factors include insufficient training, active infection, or known heart disease. In general, being physically active and pushing yourself is not dangerous. However, if you experience chest pain, palpitations, dizziness, near fainting, nausea, or vomiting, you should stop immediately. Individuals should carefully consider whether to run a marathon if they have a respiratory infection, and that maintaining adequate hydration during the event is essential."

Eva Ringdal Pedersen is a professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine (Klinisk institutt 2) and heads the Unit for Preventive Cardiology at the Heart Department, Haukeland University Hospital.
