Ann-Kristin Helland Gujord is a professor of Norwegian as a second language at the Department of Linguistic, Literary and Aesthetic Studies.

Her research encompasses various aspects of second language acquisition. She investigates how morphological, syntactic, and lexical features develop when learning a new language, and how prior language knowledge influences the acquisition of new grammatical knowledge (cross-linguistic influence). A key focus of Gujord's research is how different migrant groups' conditions and opportunities to learn Norwegian affect the outcomes of language learning, and thereby their access to education, employment, and participation in society on an equal footing with other citizens.

She leads the NFR-funded , which gathers empirical knowledge about language development in a highly represented but little-studied group of migrants: adults with little or no schooling and little or no literacy skills.

Gujord is among the researchers who have developed the Senter for norsk fagsprÃ¥k ('Research Centre for Norwegian as a Language for Special Purposes'), which in from the NFR and will start in autumn 2025. Gujord will lead the work package "FagsprÃ¥k i utdanning og arbeidsliv," which has the overarching goals of investigating the conditions for acquiring Norwegian professional language within various work contexts, and examining the consequences for individuals of acquiring, or not acquiring, relevant professional language competence.

Gujord also manage the , which examines the significance and conditions of the Norwegian language among international staff at Norwegian higher education institutions.

From 2017 to 2021, Gujord was a permanent member of the faculty board at the Faculty of Humanities. 

Since 2021 she has been a permanent member of the evaluation panel of the Swedish Research Council for Humanities and Social Sciences, which assesses linguistic applications, and for the past two years, she has served as the panel's deputy chair.

She has extensive experience in developing continuing and further education programs in Norwegian as a second language, both for primary school, secondary education, and adult education. In 2023, the revision of the PRISME study, led by Gujord, received the .

Gujord is also a textbook author, most recently with Ã… studere utvikling av andresprÃ¥k ('Studying second language development') first published in 2023 in Fagbokforlaget's 'Studying' series.
