Forskning

I am a Professor of Sociology at the University of Bergen and a former Heisenberg Fellow of the German Research Foundation. My work is driven by a strong commitment to bridging sociological theory and empirical research. I strive to translate abstract theoretical insights into clear empirical research designs—and to let empirical findings, in turn, inform and reshape theoretical understanding. This reciprocal exchange ensures that my research remains grounded in both conceptual clarity and empirical substance, engaging with foundational questions as well as pressing contemporary issues.

My approach to social theory is marked by multiparadigmatic openness and interdisciplinary dialogue. I engage deeply with fundamental concepts in social science, such as action theory, double contingency, social order, and institutions. I am particularly interested in bridging sociological imagination with analytical rigor, combining the strengths of formal methods with sociology’s rich theoretical traditions.

Empirically, I focus on  issues such as collective action, prosocial behavior, moral judgment, and social inequality, often addressing themes in political sociology, including discrimination, right-wing populism, and class-based behavioral differences. Methodologically, I employ a range of approaches—from experiments and survey research to Bayesian modeling—grounding empirical work in rigorous theoretical frameworks.
