Course description
Supplementary semester information
Focus area(s): SCULPTURE
Module leader: ARILD VÃ…GE BERGE
Included HMS: N/A
This module challenges the category of the object in the context of art. We will explore how ideas of the art object have shifted over time, and how these shifts may inform your current practices. Different approaches to the concept of the object will be discussed, along with their implications for how we perceive and interpret art. A central research question will concern whether nature reveals itself directly or only through various mediations. Can we truly observe reality, or is our view inevitably shaped – and sometimes distorted – by our own projections? The module combines lectures, text-based study, artwork analysis, tutorials, and group crits. The main assignment consists of developing an individual artistic project related to the module's theme accompanied by a short written reflection. The module concludes with an exhibition.
PLEASE NOTE: This module does not include HMS training. If you wish to use specific workshops for your project, please ensure you have access prior to the start of the teaching. (HMS sessions are offered in weeks 34 and 35.)
Objectives and Content
This is a project-based module with a focus on how various forms of evidence can be collected, investigated, unsettled, and meditated through artistic operations.
PRO modules are designed to enrich your artist development (as explored in the ART modules) through activating skills, connecting communities of practice, and investigating disciplinary territories. PRO modules allow you to focus on a specific project critically connected to your own practice within a context established by the module leader(s).
