Blue and green food from one planet

Food production is the human activity that has the largest impact on nature and land use. But what about ocean use? What role does blue food play in the global food system?

Our planet is increasingly dominated by one species: our own. More than eight billion people need food, energy, housing, and more, and there are consequences for Earth’s nature and environment.

The current state of our world is a mix of good and bad news, and this talk will try to nuance and balance different statistics for progress and development. Food production will receive particular focus, contrasting blue food originating from aquatic and marine environments with green food from the terrestrial realm.

Christian Jørgensen

is professor of biology at the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Bergen. He researches marine ecology and the role behaviour and life histories play for ecological dynamics, which he studies using numerical models for evolutionary adaptations.

More recently Jørgensen has also been involved in sustainability research, motivated by how different views of sustainability often clash when it comes to practical application despite working towards the same common goals.
