Gastrointestinal complaints and fatigue among patients and a control group after the giardiasis outbreak in Bergen in 2004
The study follows long-term gastrointestinal and fatigue-related problems following Giardia infection during the outbreak in Bergen in the autumn of 2004.
About the research project
Many individuals experienced long-term gastrointestinal and fatigue-related problems following Giardia infection during the outbreak in Bergen in the autumn of 2004. A survey conducted 3 years later showed a significantly increased prevalence of such complaints in the group with confirmed giardiasis compared with a control group. Clinical follow-up and meetings with patients in this group now seem to show improvement in many patients.
Our current efforts focus on a new short questionnaire to the 1,252 individuals with confirmed giardiasis and to the same 2,504 controls who were contacted in the 3-year follow-up study.
Our objective is to investigate the course of gastrointestinal and fatigue-related complaints after Giardia infection and how these complaints are associated with each other over time, as well as the importance of factors such as age, sex, education, sick leave before and after Giardia infection, and asthma/allergy.
We also aim to examine the importance of other factors by linking this study with data from previous studies in the population.
