Purpose
Expert knowledge is used to support decision-making in asylum processes. For example, decision-makers often seek expert advice on medical, cultural, religious, child- or gender-related issues. Asylum seekers also often gather expert knowledge, such as medical documents, to argue for their claims.Ìý

We believe it is important to know more about the role that expert knowledge play in asylum appeals processes, because this influences the decisions that are made and the lives of asylum seekers.ÌýAcknowledging the centrality and contestation of expert knowledge,Ìýwe study and compareÌýhow different types of expert knowledge are mobilized and contested in asylum appeals processes inÌýfour European countries.Ìý

What we do
We want to talk with persons who have been involved in asylum appeals processes.ÌýÌýWe hope you want to join the study!ÌýÌý
We will ask questions about your experience with the asylum appeal process.ÌýWe will make sure that you cannot be identified from anything that we publish.
The project also involves observations of asylum appeal hearings, as well as participant observation on other relevant arenas.Ìý
ParticipantsÌýcan withdraw from the project at any time without providing a reason.Ìý

Who is responsible for the project?Ìý
The study is funded by the European Research Council and led by Dr. Marry-Anne Karlsen,ÌýUniversity of Bergen, Norway. The researchers involved in the project are not part of any government authorities or media organisations.Ìý

All research activities are carried out according to the data protection regulations and ethical guidelines set by the European Research Council and the University of Bergen.
