Project description
Aim: Map upper/lower boundary and internal geometry/depositional structures of Neogene delta deposits offshore of Western Norway.
Description: This project focuses on 3D seismic data that image the offshore delta deposits of Neogene age. The delta deposits are easily mapped from the data. Furthermore, the individual seismic reflectors (delta foresets) exhibit variations in signal properties that allow for imaging of depositional structures, notably slope failure structures and channels. The results will constrain transport directions, thickness variations, delta slope and slope variations, deposition rates, and volumes. The top of the delta is eroded and will have to be estimated. Calculated volumes will be used for a crude estimate of onshore erosion, assuming that most of the deposits can be related to a paleo-Sognefjord drainage system. The results will be useful as input to the long-standing discussion of timing and amount of
coastal/onshore Cenozoic uplift, and a brief discussion of this subject will be included in this project.
Data: Seismic CGG broadband surveys NVG, NVGS. In the southeast, 2D lines will be used to constrain the volume
estimates. If necessary, public 3D surveys covering the M酶re area to the NE will be involved. Data already on disk,
permission from CGG to be obtained once the project has been accepted.
