Sustainable Land Use- is Managing Ecosystem Service Demand the Key?
Much sustainability and land use research focuses attempts to identify landscape management strategies that balance the needs of multiple stakeholders. Yet, this research often demonstrates that the potential for such strategies is limited because there are unavoidable trade-offs between the supply of ecostystem services. For example, croplands cannot supply high levels of timber or biodiversity.
In this talk, we will first draw upon examples from large social-ecological projects in Germany and Mt Kilimanjaro to show that these trade-offs may be overcome by altering our societal demand for ecosystem services. We will then present initial results from the Norwegian Citizens panel (Norsk medborgerpanel) showing how demand differs across the social and geographical strata of Norwegian society, and discuss the implications of these patterns for sustainable land use.
