AUV training is complete
NORMAR team completes intensive training ahead of new AUV arrival
Published: (Updated: )
The NORMAR team has successfully wrapped up three intensive and rewarding weeks of mission planning, launch and recovery exercises, along with hands-on training in real operational scenarios. The training combined focused teamwork with a strong sense of collaboration.
With preparations now complete, anticipation is building as the new HUGIN Superior autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) is set to arrive from Kongsberg in the coming weeks. The team is eager to bring the system online and begin collecting high-quality data.
The HUGIN AUV system is equipped to carry a wide range of advanced sensors, including synthetic aperture sonar, multibeam echo sounders, cameras, lasers, sub-bottom profilers, and other scientific instruments. It has high maneuverability, the ability to operate at depths of up to 6,000 metres and a state-of-the-art navigration system.
With the next research cruise scheduled for June, the NORMAR team is looking forward to applying their newly developed skills in real-world operations. The arrival of the AUV marks an exciting step forward for NORMAR’s ocean exploration capabilities.
The initiative is made possible through funding from the Ministry of Energy via the Norwegian Offshore Directorate, with Kongsberg Discovery responsible for building and delivering the system.
Exciting times ahead for Norwegian deep-sea research!
