CET Lunch: Support and Contestation to the Energy Transition on Social Media: From YouTube to TikTok
Welcome to this CET Lunch seminar with Julià Tudó Cisquella, PhD Candidate at the Deparmtent of Comparative Politics, ºÚÁϳԹÏ×ÊÔ´
Transitioning to cleaner energy sources for electricity generation is central to achieving the climate goals set by the Paris Agreement. Despite their rising competitiveness, these sources still face social and political resistance. Existing research on public support and opposition to the green transition has mostly employed surveys to assess public opinion, paying less attention to social media platforms. With the goal of offering new insights into this emerging literature, we compile all posts uploaded to YouTube and TikTok in 2025 that mention biomass, geothermal, hydropower, nuclear, solar, and wind energy across seven Western countries (United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Spain, Italy, Germany and France). We address five key questions: which clean energy sources are discussed most often (1); which attract the greatest contestation (2) and engagement (3); who drives their discussion (4); and how interconnected the broader energy transition debate is (5). This research contributes to the literature on energy politics on social media, highlighting the role of these platforms in shaping debates on the energy transition.
