Research

My research addresses the Latin American cultural production and intellectual history of the nineteenth century, focusing on the relationship between narrative, Catholicism, and conservatism, particularly in Mexico. I also have a special interest in 芦cuadros de costumbres禄 (sketches of manner), one of the literary expressions of costumbrismo that refers to popular short texts depicting local daily scenes, habits, and social types published normally in the 19th-century press. I am currently working on a project that examines representations of marriage practices in nineteenth-century novels and the press, exploring how these depictions negotiated moral, religious, and social expectations in the formation of modern affective and gender imaginaries.

Until recently, I have been partner in the project (2019-2023 - Vetenskapsr氓det ID 2018-01171), in which Andrea Castro (University of Gothenburg) and I have studied how literature and other cultural artifacs articulated positions that competed with the liberal script of progress; not frontally as it is usually studied, but rather infecting life and narrative from within, creating and preserving a conservative perception of the world.

Teaching

I have over 30 years of teaching experience in Norway, the United States, and Spain. In my current position as Professor of Latin American literature, I have been responsible for creating, coordinating, and developing courses at the undergraduate and graduate level (, , , , , , , and ). I have also created and taught - Language Students in Work Practices, a course that aimed to demonstrate the professional competence that language studies provide through practice in institutions and establishments abroad or in Norway.

As a teacher, I seek to integrate literary and cultural analysis with the development of advanced communicative and intercultural competences in Spanish. My courses are designed to engage students with the richness and diversity of the Spanish-speaking world while fostering critical thinking, linguistic accuracy, and cultural literacy. I see language learning as a dynamic and scaffolded process in which theoretical reflection and communicative practice reinforce one another.

I advocate for foreign language programs in higher education that promote continuous growth in both disciplinary knowledge and language proficiency. In this spirit, I support an integrative curriculum that enables students to navigate Spanish-language academic contexts with confidence and to communicate effectively across a range of social and professional settings.

Published teaching materials and articles in the fields of didactics

My interest in didactics and research-based teaching has resulted in the publication of nine articles in specialized journals, as well as two textbooks and one book chapter for the use in the Spanish classroom. In my articles, I offer alternative theoretical approaches to teaching literature and culture in Spanish for non-native speakers at the university level. These publications reflect my development as a teacher in time as well.
