Hans Fredrik Marthinussen has his primary field of research in property law, in particular mortgage law and transfers of land or rights in land. He does, however, work regularly within the entire field of private law, and teaches and publishes also on bankruptcy and contract law. He obtained his PhD on a thesis on mortgage accessoriness in Europe, comparing mortgage law in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, France and England. Marthinussen har extensive international experience with comparative property law and participates in a number of international research projects. He is Norwegian representative in the subgroup on security rights in immovable property of the Trento group “Common Core of a European Private Law” and in the research group “Flexibilität, Sicherheit und Effizienz der Grundpfandrechte in Europa”. The latter group’s extensive comparative research work on security rights, property law, and insolvency law can be found at . He has been a guest scholar at Harvard Law School and regular guest lecturer at Albert-Ludwig-Universität, Freiburg im Breisgau.

Marthinussen is the head of The University of Bergen’s research group on the law of obligations, property law and bankruptcy law, and he is responsible for the teaching on property, mortgage and bankruptcy law.

Marthinussen has a broad field of interest and also publishes in other disciplines, including within criminal law/criminal procedure/police law in drug-related matters and within administrative law. He is also widely used in Norwegian media and won the Bergens Tidende’s Award for debater of the year in 2016 and the Meltzer Prize for outstanding research dissemination in 2018. He won the Cappelen Damm Academic Writer's Scholarship 2013 for his book on conflicting rights in property. He also has extensive experience as a faculty board member and has been a long time board member of the Nordic Lawyer’s meeting. He currently sits on the board of the financial market funds. He is also a board member in the trade union for researchers, knowledge workers and students ("Forskerforbundet") at the University of Bergen.
