Hanne Marie Johansen is accociate professor in gender studies and humanities at the Centre for Women's and Gender Research (SKOK) and first librarian at the Library for Arts and Humantities. In her library position, Hanne Marie is assigned to History, Cultural Studies and Gender Studies. She holds a PhD in History and has worked with older and more contemporary history with emphasis on women's and gender history, the history of law, of the family and of the city. The book Separasjon og skilsmisse i Norge 1536–1909. En familie- og rettshistorisk studie from 2001 is an end result of her PhD project.

Hanne Marie has co-written several more works, like I gode og vonde dagar. Familieliv i Noreg frå reformasjonen til vår tid (2003) This is also available as an e-book. When Drammen heldt its city anniversary in 2011, Hanne Marie wrote a monography: Slik levde de da : familie- og hverdagsliv i Drammen gjennom 200 år. In the spring of 2019, her book on Norwegian queer history was published by Samlaget. The book is called Skeive linjer i norsk historie frå norrøn tid til i dag and describes queer history in Norway from vikings to modern day gay-rights activism.

Hanne Marie participates in academic conferences as well as in more popular scientific fora for communication.

Hanne Marie has previously taught history at the university, but today her focus is on the study programs in Gender Studies.
